How to Add Custom Songs to Spotify Easily

Whether you have an unreleased remix, a rare live recording, or a personal track that isn’t available on mainstream streaming platforms, Spotify makes it remarkably easy to blend your own audio files right into your daily playlists. This feature is called Local Files, and once set up, it bridges the gap between your personal music library and your favorite streaming app.

Step 1: Prepare Your Audio Files

Before diving into Spotify, you need to make sure your tracks are in a format the app can read. Spotify natively supports standard audio formats like MP3, M4P (non-video), and MP4.

  • Pro Tip: If your music is stored as FLAC, WAV, or OGG, you may need to convert them to MP3 first for seamless playback.
  • Move all the custom songs you want to add into a dedicated folder on your computer so they are easy to locate.

Step 2: Enable Local Files on Desktop (Windows & Mac)

The initial setup has to happen on the Spotify desktop app (this feature does not work through the web player).

  1. Open Spotify on your computer and click your profile icon in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Settings from the dropdown menu.
  3. Scroll down until you see the Your Library section and toggle on Show Local Files.
  4. Once enabled, click the Add a source button that appears right below it.
  5. Select the folder on your computer where your custom music files are saved.

Your tracks will now instantly populate inside your Spotify library under a new folder named Local Files.

Step 3: Sync and Listen on Mobile (iOS & Android)

Want to take those custom songs on the go? You can easily sync them to your phone or tablet if you have a Spotify Premium subscription.

  1. On your desktop, create a new playlist and drag all your newly added local songs into it.
  2. Ensure both your computer and your mobile device are connected to the same Wi-Fi network and logged into the same Spotify account.
  3. Open Spotify on your mobile device, head to Settings and privacy > Apps and devices, and toggle on Local audio files (on iOS, you may also need to grant Spotify access via your device’s files app or settings).
  4. Navigate to the playlist you created on your desktop, open it on your phone, and tap the Download (down-arrow) switch.

Give it a moment to sync over your local network, and your custom tracks will be ready to play offline anywhere.

Troubleshooting Common Headaches

  • Tracks won’t play on mobile? Double-check that you actually downloaded the playlist while connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your desktop.
  • Songs are missing? Ensure your files are clean MP3s and that you didn’t accidentally delete or move the source folder on your computer.
